Soundswash Adventures

The Sound Swashbucklers had an incredibly exciting first week! They kicked off session two with a flurry of activity. Monday was spent exploring the estuary, sniggling for eels in the freshwater, pulling some impressive seines in the saltwater, and learning all about salt water. Tuesday morning was focused on birds, as we not only learned about how birds fly but also were able to meet some amazing birds thanks to our friends at the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center. The afternoon was focused on buoyancy and what gives things the ability to float. We spent Wednesday learning about and experiencing the importance of wind power on the Christeen and by building our very own windsocks. Thursday we took an oath to be stewards of our beaches, promising to always make sure we respect and care for our Earth, and then did our part by doing an intense beach cleanup! We also met six different types of crabs and made our own versions of them to take home. On Friday, we combined all of our new-found knowledge of salinity, buoyancy, and wind power to work together to build flotsam boats out of all of our beach cleanup findings! We raced our boats, had a super fun kayak adventure, and even a scavenger hunt along the beach! Week two is expected to be even more exciting as we meet even more creatu

res in our bay and some friends from the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery!
