Spring Training

The WaterFront Center is a US SAILING accredited school, providing sailing lessons and programs for sailors of all ages and skills. Adults and families may choose to enjoy a 2-hour Discover Sail, or a 4-hour Sailing 101 lesson. For comprehensive instruction, adults enroll in our Basic Keelboat Course and may then move on to Basic Cruising. We also provide spinnaker instruction and race coaching for our intermediate and advanced sailors. WFC boasts a variety of junior programs as well. For third graders through high school, there is a spring, summer and fall program for every sailor.

So who is teaching all these courses? Your WFC sailing instructors are professionals- not only do they love to sail, but they’ve also been trained to teach you using the best methods. WFC sailing instructors are US SAILING certified, which means they meet (and often exceed!) the national standard for instruction. Trained to combine their passion with proven teaching methods, WFC instructors will provide the best possible experience for their sailor students.

This spring and early summer, WFC hosts a number of training courses to get new instructors up to speed for instruction. May 2-4, WFC hosted a Basic Keelboat Instructor Evaluation course, which preps instructors for teaching keelboat lessons.  Earning US SAILING certification is no easy task: candidates are put to the test- literally – with classroom, dockside and on-the-water testing, as well as theory and knowledge based exams. This year twelve candidates went for BK certification, six of them representing WFC.

Instructors who will teach cruising skills and prepare our renters for chartering overnight seek Cruising Certification. Candidates for Cruising certification must hold a USCG captain’s license and have significant time at sea. The evaluation process includes night sailing and overboard recovery, navigation, as well as general seamanship. WFC hosted a Cruising Instructor Course May 18-20 and are pleased to welcome a new Cruising instructor to our team.

All WFC instructors who will be teaching dinghy programs, including Pixel, Opti, 420 and Sunfish programs must be Level 1- Small Boat Instructor certified. This is a 4-day course that covers teaching methods, curriculum and lesson development, risk management, and most importantly, how to teach sailing using engaging activities in the classroom, on-shore and on the water. Each year, WFC hosts a Level  1 for twelve instructor candidates.

There is nothing better than sharing what you love to do with others. Our WFC sailing instructors do just that. And with US SAILING certification, rest assured your instructors have been trained to provide you with an outstanding sailing experience.
