Opening Weekend

Spring came early this year, with flowers and pollen of all sorts making their first appearances in April rather than May. April was filled with beautiful days touching the mid 70’s with sunshine making it ever easier to perform spring-time maintenance on our boats. The early spring time weather this year did not change the schedule, but it certainly made it a whole lot more pleasant getting boats ready. Many of you know our season begins very early every year, with our High School Sailors hitting the water in early March followed closely by Nassau Community College’s Learn to Sail Program beginning the first week of March and soon after all of our instructors get on the water for instructor training sails and shaking off the winter  rust.

Even though the earlier spring time weather did not necessarily get most of you out on the water sooner, it did get many people excited about being out on the water, whether it was kayaking, sailing or on Christeen. We received many phone calls about people ready to go on a Kayak rental in April! Talk about some brave souls, with water temperatures still in the uppers 40’s and low 50’s we had to advise those people that it was still too early to be renting a kayak.

This past weekend, May 5th and 6th, was our opening weekend and we were busy!  Our weekend was filled with activities such as: US Sailing Basic Keelboat Instructor Training Course, WFC Racing, private lessons, check out sails, US Powerboat Training Course, High School Sailing practice, and Opti Sailing! The weather did not fully cooperate this weekend to give even the bravest of kayakers the push they needed to get out on the water.

Be sure to join us for the rest of the season: We have ramped up everything from last year and we are going to be able to something for nearly everyone, from last minute private lessons and discover sails to sunfish clinics, kayak and standup paddle board rentals, and even more cruising charters! We are excited about the season and can’t wait for you to enjoy Oyster Bay and beyond with us!
